Gerard Morris from Meath spent a day with me afloat on one of my local Lakes. The weather was mild and after a very stormy week the lake had a few days to settle. Gerard informed me he would love to have a chance to better his PB of 15lb he had taken in September on another lake in the area.
It wasn't long before he was into his first fish of 6lb followed very soon after by a 10.5lb, 14lb 11oz, 12lb 3oz. Over lunch Gerard said his scales were very old and the biggest fish we had might indeed be his PB.
We finished the day with 7 pike to Gererd, total weight 78lb 3oz and yes he managed to break his PB with a lovely clean fish of 17lb 15oz. Needless to say, all fish were safely released to fight another day.

This week has been the most difficult fishing period I have ever experienced, despite this Bill Holmes and I managed some fine pike on 3 venues. The 4 best pike were 18lbs 11 ozs, 20lbs, 21lbs and 24lbs 10 ozs not bad for the ferocious weather. The short days added to the degree of difficulty, however turnover was the big factor and searching out suitable waters was part of the challenge. All methods were used and on more than one occasion sheltering behind islands and dead baiting was by necessity rather than design.
The annual Guides pike fishing event took place on Lough Gowna and the weather had a negative effect on results. The best pike was 21 lbs and handful of 5lb and 6 lbs were caught, the Pikers lodge was the social venue and the weather had no effect on participants except perhaps on the following morning.
The present bad spell of weather is likely to have negative effects on fishing for the next week or so and will only improve as waters recede and temperatures level off.
