Despite wet and windy conditions at the weekend, some good rainbow trout were caught with an English visitor catching 11 fish, one of which was 5.5lbs. With the colder weather moving in, nymph and buzzers seem to be the best flies to use.
Rathbeggan fishery is open over Christmas (with the exception of Christmas Day) and is hosting a New Year’s Day competition from 12-4pm. There will be a variety of prizes on offer including a handmade 7 ft fly rod for first prize. For further information www.rathbegganlakes.com
The first leg of the Winter League was held on Sunday with ten competitors braving the bad weather conditions. 11 rainbow trout were caught in total, with the winner catching 5 fish (Noel Shields) for 204cm. In second place, Dublin angler Paddy McLoughlin with 3 fish for 118cm and in joint 3rd place was Adam Cooney and Joe McCormack with 1 fish each for 43cm.
On the carp lake, Henry Kilpatrick has had some good fishing over the last few days, with a carp of 8.5lbs caught using maggots. Youth groups have also been quite successful with Dublin 12 Youth Services and Donore Youth Group catching roach to 1lbs and tench to 0.75lbs, using sweetcorn.
Maynooth Fishery has recently been stocked and is fishing well with one visitor catching 24 rainbow trout at the weekend!
Staff from the Central Fisheries Board fished here last week and despite very wet weather conditions all caught fish! Paul McLoone caught 6 fish and the heaviest fish at 6.5lbs. The rest of the weekend was quiet enough due to inclement weather with a few anglers catching on Saturday but none of the big fish were taken.
The Grand Canal at Hazelhatch has been fishing well with Dublin angler Rodney Gaynor reporting good roach catches using a 6m whip, size 18 barbless hooks and a canal float. The best bait was a single red maggot. There appears to be some good pike in this part of the canal at the moment also.
Rodney Gaynor also had some excellent fishing at Leixlip Reservoir with some excellent roach fishing up to 10 ozs. Using size 18 barbless hooks, he was fishing on the bottom using maggot feeder methods.
