Bohernabreena Reservoirs

There are two reservoirs in Bohernabreena. The lower reservoir is small, and the average size of the trout is just over 0.5 lb but trout to 4.5 lb have been recorded here. The upper reservoir is larger and nearly a mile long. Here the trout are much smaller but more plentiful and average four to the pound. The lower lake is stocked every year.

Dublin Corporation controls and manages these reservoirs. In order to fish them you are required to have a permit from the Corporation or be a member of either the Dublin Trout Anglers or the Dodder Anglers Club. Permits can be obtained from : Dublin Corporation, Engineering Department, Block 1, Floor 3, New Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8, Tel: 6722301. Season, weekly and day permits are available.


Bohernabreena Reservoir, Glenasmole, South County Dublin.


The No. 49 bus from the City Centre terminates near Bohernabreena Pitch & Putt, which is approximately 15 minutes walk from the Lower Reservoir. By car, a narrow roadway leads from the entrance gates to the Upper Reservoir. Parking is permitted inside these gates. (Please note opening times). There is a pathway around the Upper Reservoir with access from the car park at the southern end near Castlekelly Bridge.

Brown Trout.


1 March to 30 September.


Fly fishing only is allowed and this is by Ministerial order.

Best Flies

Wet and dry fly patterns in small sizes are recommended.

Wet flies: Greenwell’s Glory, Hare’s Ear, Connemara Black, Black Pennel, Invicta, Coch-y-Bondhu, Duckfly, Muddler Minnor.

Dry flies: Black Gnat, Red Spinner, Brown Sedge, Green Peter.
